~ Week 1: Tutorial 10-12

Aaaaaaaalrighty then...let the rambling begin.
Emma Heron and Griffith University go head-to-head in week one.

I must begin this blog with the cold, bitter truth... the thought of this subject (New Communication Technologies) does not leave me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. The feeling is more of a nauseous head spin to be exact. Computers are not my forte. Sure, i spend at least twelve hours a day on myspace or msn'ing but aside from posting a comment and uploading a photo, my computer knowledge is extremely limited. Being a knowledge hungry first year though, it is the opportunity to expand this knowledge that will keep me taking copious amounts of notes and lectures and attending every tutorial religiously (feel free to re-read sentence when considering marks for this entry).

In at least 5 years time i would love to be speaking the words "This is Emma Heron reporting live for 60 Minutes". Living in the 21st century with all its new communication technology, I accept that having some understanding and practice with computers will be of great sevice and advantage in achieving such a goal. So here i am, and here i'll stay.

After flicking through the first few chapters of the course text "Communication and New Media" my outlook on technology has already begun to expand vastly. Its references to one of my favourite books,George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four with its telescreens and warnings of a 'totalitarian world state', captured and engrossed me. When reading this book, i never truely believed that perhaps it spoke some truth. To me, it was a futuritic fantasy, thrilling with its ideas of absolute distopia. After reading the beginning of the text, i began to feel a little clostrophobic sitting at my computer, mobile phone by my side, ipod headphones plugged hard into my ears. Perhaps this subject will appeal to the humanitarian (not the technician) in me.

And so that's where i'll leave things for this week. Its short and sweet but jam packed with the weird and wonderful brain candy of Emma Heron- apsiring computer lover.
